Thick, golden and a beauty-cabinet classic. The right way to use castor oil on your hair.

By Hammad Tariq · 6 November 2026 · 2 min read

Why castor oil?

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid and is very thick, so it coats hair and seals in moisture. It's used to condition the scalp, reduce breakage and make hair look fuller.

How to use it

  1. 1Mix 1 part castor oil with 2 parts coconut, almond or olive oil (castor alone is too thick).
  2. 2Warm slightly and part your hair into sections.
  3. 3Massage into the scalp for 5 minutes with your fingertips.
  4. 4Comb the rest through the lengths.
  5. 5Leave for 1–2 hours or overnight, then shampoo twice.

Once or twice a week is enough. More isn't better.

Patch test first

Apply a little behind your ear and wait 24 hours. Castor oil is for external use only; don't swallow it.

Quick answers

There's no strong scientific proof it speeds growth, but it moisturises the scalp and reduces breakage, which helps hair look thicker and healthier.
