From the beri tree
Sidr honey comes from bees feeding on the blossoms of the sidr (beri, Ziziphus) tree, which flowers briefly in autumn. Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is famous for it.
Why it's expensive
- One short flowering season a year
- Small harvests
- High demand across the Gulf and South Asia
How to tell real sidr
- Thick and buttery, often with a caramel taste
- Amber to dark colour
- Bought from a beekeeper or seller who can name the harvest
How to enjoy it
A spoonful on its own in the morning, as many families do, or in warm (not hot) water.
